For this month I choose Pterodactyl to recive a donation. Pterodactyl is a game management panel that is very stable and has many features. Its licenced under the MIT Licence and all of the source code is available to anyone who wants it. To get started all you need is a server with 1 panel installation and 1 Daemon installation. The install process consists of setting your domain, database, and creating your daemons. Once you have a panel setup you can create a daemon which is easy with the instructions. This can be on the same or different server and (should) be secured with SSL. You can have virtual (KVM/Vmware), or physical servers there is no limit to the ammount of nodes/servers you can have. To install more nodes all you need to do is install the daemon on any server and connect it to the panel. This means you can have one central server and many side nodes. Pterodactyl also has a powerful console and file browser along with Secure FTP support for very easy management. You can find a full list of supported games on their website but it seems to support Minecraft and Source the best and Mumble and Teamspeak voice servers. Some of the other features like Subusers make it easy to allow your other admins accsess and with IP allocation and database managment you can use almost anything. Personally I use Pterodactyl to manage and run the dwarven-realm.co Minecraft and Mumble servers. Since we have many VPS servers spread out across the world using Pterodactyl makes it easy to manage without having to worry about restrictive licencesing and large costs. Pterodactyl is another great free web based administraton software that every sys-admin should have in their arsenal.
If I can only say one sentence about the Wikimedia Foundation It would be The Wikimedia Foundation puts Freedom and convenience over profit. Why is that important you ask? Its because the freedom of code, information, and data helps the world as a whole go further. The Wikimedia foundation built the largest collection for Free and Open information and data and it is important to keep it open and easily accessible for everyone no matter who they are or where there from. When you go on their website the first thing you will see is these words “Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge.” That statement right there is why I chose them to receive my donation. The Wikimedia Foundation made more than Wikipedia. Here are the rest of their projects: Wikitonary, Wikiquote, Wikibooks, WIkisource, Wikinews, Wikiversity, Wikispecies, Mediawiki, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikivoyage. Most, if not all of the articles, images, and data are licensed under a Creative Commons or other permissive copyright license. Or they are in the public domain. The Wikimedia Foundation is incredibly important and without them the internet would be a much worse place and our research projects will be many times more difficult. Wombathaven sincerely thanks you for all of your hard work and we hope to see your collection of information and projects continue to grow and change the lives of millions around the world for the better.
For the month of October I chose the FreeBSD Foundation. The reason is because FreeBSD is the best UNIX derived operating system to date. Unlike Linux, which was built as an alternative kernel to UNIX with GNU software on top. FreeBSD is invisible to most people but what many don’t know is that it powers the Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Wii, Wii U, and Nintendo Switch gaming consoles. FreeBSD is like Linux as in it is also used on embedded systems, work stations, and super computers. FreeBSD is a lot like using Debian GNU/Linux, Its very minimal stable and efficient. Its biggest issue is the outdated software like KDE 4 making it a not so good desktop experience out of the box. FreeBSD makes a great base operating system that can be easily built off of. Personally I don’t use FreeBSD on desktops but I do use it on my home file server which is powered by FreeNAS (an open source NAS software built from FreeBSD) I’m hoping that contributing to the FreeBSD Foundation furthers the development of the operating system so it can soon be on par with GNU/Linux.
The KDE Community is dedicated to making easy to use Free and Open Source software. They made one of the best desktop environments (Plasma) and some of the best utilities. The Plasma Desktop is my favorite software from KDE. It is a very Windows Vista like desktop experience which is good for users who are coming from windows. Konsole (the terminal emulator), Dolphin (The file manager) and Discover (The graphical software manager) gives KDE Plasma desktops a very welcoming feel and the applications made for KDE integrate well with the desktop. KDE Connect allows you to remotely control your computer, run a command, control media, send and recive files all from your mobile Android device. Also with the inclusion of “Vaults” you can create safe encrypted folders on your system that require a password to view and interact with the contents. Therefore making KDE Desktops environments very attractive to travelers with sensitive data on their device. KDE deserved this donation because they make such great software and I personally use KDE software every day to read my emails, install software, manage my finances, protect my files, and play games. I recommend KDE software to anyone new to Linux.
I pledge to donate $5-$20 every month to a large variety of Free and Open Source Software projects. Wombathaven uses and promotes Free Software understands that Free Software is important to both the community and businesses. A percentage of all Wombathaven packages will go back to a Free Software project.
